[Demo Reel] 2015

My name is Jack Gray, and this is a demo reel I created in December 2015, my online alias is MrCurlypanda and has been since 2009 when I was 17. I have studied at Rotherham College of Arts and Technology and Leeds Beckett University and I currently work at Rotherham College of Arts and Technology teaching Games and Animation while animating freelance in my spare time; this is a collection of all the work I have done from 2013 – 2015, ranging from personal videos, commissions, university projects and college projects. The video is just under 2 minutes long and features the music of Aloe Island Posse; Downtown.

[Commission] Children in Care - Life Stories Animation

This was a commission I did for Sheffield City Council, I worked with a company called Sort of… Films to create this video, I was to create a 3 minute animated opening while the video editing company provided live action footage for the rest of the video. The video was about Children in Care homes, and my part of the video featured children who talk about their experience of going into a care home at a young age and how it’s affected them. The video was started in the beginning of February 2016 and finished on the 26th.

[Commission] SHU Animation - Discussion

The second commission for Sheffield Hallam University to help Tutors understand how to teach lesson plans to their students, in this case; the video is used to help discuss "discussions" among the students. The video was commissioned to me by Andrew Bullough a curriculum developer and project manager for Science Education based in Sheffield Hallam University. The video took a little over a month to complete, starting on the 6th of November until the 8th of December, I recreated the character models rather than using the models from the previous animation as requested by the client.

[Animatic] Joshua Man

This is the most recent animation I have started in my spare time, a short video titled ‘Joshua Man’, Joshua man is a character a friend of mine had when he was 4 – 5 and we thought it might be good to take all the old drawings he had and turn it into a real super hero. This is currently only an animatic, so some scenes are subject to change or be shortened/lengthened. The animatic took around 2 days to complete and I’ve been discussing whether or not I should send this video to an animation festival.

[Drawings] Animated gifs

Here are a few animated .gifs that I have done over a long period of time, from the very beginning of using Flash to some more recent drawings; Making animated .gifs is somewhat more enjoyable than drawing still images, because it doesn’t take quite as long as creating a full animation and you can have more fun with it than creating a simple drawing. The spinning head was part of the pre-production I did for the Sheffield Hallam Animation I created, the horse was animated in my spare time, and the girl is a clip from the animation Magical Girl.

[Commission] SHU Animation - Dilemma

The first commission for Sheffield Hallam University to help Tutors understand how to teach lesson plans to their students, in this case; the video is used to help discuss and solve "dilemma" with the students. The video was commissioned to me by Pat Morton the director of WiSET and project manager for Engage based in Sheffield Hallam University. The video took a just over a month and half to complete, starting on the 17th of April until the 22nd of June, I received a lot of feedback throughout this project while animating independently. This video is the first of a possible six.

This animation was created for Channel 4’s YouTube Channel; #Mashed. The video above were segments for several episodes of their show to be featured on 4 on Demand. Though Anthony Price drew the character I lip-synced everything you see and edited the character to wear different clothing’s and feature different hairstyles, though most segments weren’t used in the episode also provided, some were used for adverts and trailers for the show. The video was used throughout 2015 in several videos, taking snippets and dropping them in certain videos. Here is a link to the full video: http://www.channel4.com/programmes/mashed/on-demand

[Personal] Super 80's

Super 80’s was a video I made as a Flash / After Effects Test, the video was finished on 18th of July in 2014 and uses the soundtrack from the Grand Theft Auto: Vice City game. I created it during summer as a little solo project while I wasn’t busy with commission work; everything was drawn and animated by myself. The video was influenced by the 80s TV show Miami Vice. I started animating a second Super 80s the following Summer, however due to time limitations I cancelled the project, it can be viewed; here.

[Commission] The Science of Power Ups: Ocarina of Time

This animation was created for Channel 4’s Youtube Channel; #Mashed, I was the lead animator for the project whereas my good friend Anthony Price did the pre-production and post-production. The video was created in just under a month once the pre-production was done, I started on the 1st of December in 2014 and finished December 22nd in 2014, the post production was finished on the 1st of January in 2015. I bounced ideas back and forth between Anthony while animating in how I should go about animating it, however we were both pleased with the outcome as were #Mashed.

[Commission] Visualised it LTD Animation Trailer

This was a video I created for the video production company Visualised it LTD, the video was to show that the company also created animations for clients rather than just live action. Visualised it LTD came to me asking for my animation services, in which I created three animations overall for them before moving onto new things. This video was finished on the 12th of November in 2014, everything was created by myself and the characters are all original created by me too. The audio used is royalty free and was provided by the company after production.

[University] Space Girl 3000

Space Girl 3000 was my end of year animation while studying at Leeds Beckett University, the video got me a First overall and was shown at the Everyman Cinema in Leeds alongside other students work. Everything in the video was created by myself, aside from the sound design which was created from scratch by my sound designer and good friend Daniel Dunkley. The video took roughly a year to animate making it the longest time it’s taken for me to animate a video. I am very happy with the outcome however thought the frame by frame could be improved.

The bottom row is a series of characters from my original idea, The Universe of Matt Miles.

[Commission] Watflo System

This video was created for Melport Plastics to pitch their invention to investors, the video shows how their invention works and how it can help people save money, water and electricity. Melport Plastics came to Visualised it LTD; a company based in Barnsley, who commissioned me to create the video for them. The video went through a few changes before it was finalized, being completed on 16th of December in 2014. The video was animated entirely by myself, and was the last video I animated for Visualised it LTD.

[Commission] Cousin Joe Twoshacks - White Rabbit

This animation was a collaboration between myself, Anthony Price and Oliver Hindle. All the art and drawings were created by Oliver himself and given to me and Anthony to animate, Although Anthony did a lot of the animation I was in charge of the final scenes and the video changes at the end, namely; adding and animating the black rabbits to the video. Oliver came to Anthony to animate the video and I was asked to help out midway through the production. The video is a commission for the web series Joe Cartoon and took over a month to finish.

[Animation Test] Magical Girl

The animation test Magical Girl was created on the 26th of September in 2014, the animation was created to test my frame by frame ability. It isn’t anything too complicated as I know I have struggled with frame by frame animation in the past. The animation took around 2 days to make and once completed I requested feedback from my twitter followers; more dynamic shots were the main suggestions and the other feedback were suggesting music, colour, sfx etc. I may return to the video in the future and complete it when I have more spare time.

[Drawings] Character Concept Art

These are a variety of character designs and character tests from a range of animations I have made, ranging from newer videos like the Sheffield Hallam University animations and the Children in Care video, to the Science of Power-ups video. The characters here do not have line art as it is the style of animation I am most comfortable with, however prior to 2015 I never animated using line-less art as I found it too complicated to work with, it was only until I animated The Science of Power-ups did I start to pick it up more.

[Commission] Visualised it LTD Trailer

During the summer of 2014, the company Visualised it LTD came to me asking for my animation services, they wanted me originally to create a trailer advertising the whole company, with examples of their work within the animation. Around August of 2014 I created them this video for them to use, with tv’s dotted around the video for the video editors to insert footage that they have created. The company were very impressed with the outcome and offered me a few more animation commissions.

[Commission] Mathew Taylor's Anniversary Video

This animation was created as a favor for a friend, he wanted me to create a video for him to present to his girlfriend on his 4 year anniversary. After he enlisted the help from Jon Bailey to do the voice over I started animating the video, starting from the 15th of September and finishing on the 30th of October in 2014. The video was challenging as it was the first time I had to draw and animate people who I know personally, it was tricky to make sure the characters looked like who they were meant to represent.

[University] The Universe of Matt Miles - Pilot Episode

The Universe of Matt Miles was a personal project which I adapted into a university project; the concept of the animation was to relate to experiences’ that I had while studying at university and create a web show of it. However my tutors liked the idea and suggested making a pilot episode as part of my second year animation production unit. The video was created entirely by myself, I don’t consider the animation in the video to be good but I consider it a milestone to when I started improving, I started the animatic to the first episode here.
